iPhone Duo Changes SwiftUI Layouts: Here’s How to Adapt Your App

In this final video of the iPhone Duo set, I show how I make a SwiftUI app truly iPhone Duo aware: adaptive toolbar priorities, horizontal-only toolbar placement, fold and hinge visualization, and a two-pane planner layout using arrangement views and reserved regions.

SwiftUI Swipe Actions Beyond List: ScrollView & Grids in OS 27

OS 27 brings native SwiftUI swipe actions to ScrollView and grids, not just List. Learn how to build delete, archive, and favourite actions, configure swipe edges and full-swipe behaviour, handle animations, and work around a current beta refresh issue when action labels need to change.

What's Next?

Over the next two weeks, I cover one more new OS 27 feature and then dive in to scanning images and reading text with Apple Intelligence and the vision framework

SwiftUI View Transitions - Zoom, Cover & Crossfade in iOS 27

SwiftUI offers several ways to reveal destination views, and choosing the right transition depends on the context. In this video, I build a gallery comparing four options: automatic navigation, zoom navigation, full screen cover, and the new crossfade transition in iOS 27.

You’ll learn the difference between navigation and presentation. Automatic and zoom transitions use value-based NavigationLink routing within a NavigationStack, while cover and fade use optional state to control presentation.

For zoom navigation, I’ll demonstrate how to combine @Namespace, matchedTransitionSource, and navigationTransition(.zoom) to create a smooth transition between views.

We’ll also explore full screen covers, reusable dismissal controls, sheet detents, background styling, and crossfade presentations that keep underlying content visible but noninteractive.

By the end, you’ll understand how these transitions work, how to implement them, and when each approach makes sense in your SwiftUI apps.

Image attachments with Vision and Foundation Models in iOS 27

In my this SwiftUI tutorial, I turn a manual wine-entry form into an image-powered scanner. I use Vision to recognize text on a wine label, then send the image and OCR output to the iOS 27 Foundation Models API to identify structured details such as winery, variety, country, region, vintage, and alcohol percentage.

I also cover the implementation details that make this useful in a real app: checking whether the model supports vision, preparing and resizing images, defining guided @Generable output, validating generated values, handling missing text and unavailable models, and preserving manual edits for anything the scan gets wrong. Watch it to see the complete pipeline wired into a SwiftUI and SwiftData app.

Blog Post

Another blog post was released last week and I was fortunate enough to get it featured on FatBobMan’s latest newsletter. (https://fatbobman.com/en/weekly/issue-160/) Getting this kind of recognition makes it all worthwhile.

In this post, I look at why SwiftUI’s Text interpolation is much more than ordinary Swift string interpolation.

When I pass a string literal to Text, I can interpolate numbers, dates, Text views, and images while preserving localization and letting SwiftUI format values for each user’s locale.

I cover practical format styles for currency, percentages, measurements, byte counts, and dates, plus SwiftUI date styles and countdown timers that update themselves. I also show how nested Text values replace deprecated Text + Text composition, giving translators one complete sentence that can be reordered for different languages. Finally, I explain when Markdown in a Text literal is enough and when AttributedString is the better tool for runtime styling or attributes Markdown cannot express. Read the full article for examples, localization guidance, and the gotchas that can affect how Text interpolation behaves.

SwiftUI Cookbook

I had the pleasure of being one on the Review Team for Juan Catalan’s SwiftUI Cookbook (4th Edition). I was also on the Review Team for the 3rd Edition, but this time Juan took it to the next level.

SwiftUI Cookbook is a hands-on guide that walks you from responsive layout patterns to production-ready features.

The book collects focused recipes that demonstrate stacks, grids, and custom layouts, then shows how to manage state with the Observation framework and bindings.

It covers persistence with SwiftData and @AppStorage, fetching remote APIs with async/await and Codable, and practical Canvas and Liquid Glass effects.

Every recipe is tied to a sample app so you can copy patterns straight into your projects.

Even today in the age of generative AI, books like this are invaluable. If you do not know what SwiftUI can do, how can you direct the AI to do it for you? Juan is thorough and covers a lot of ground. I highly recommend it. This is an unsolicited review. I get no kickback from this.

More apps updated for iPhone Duo

After updating MyLinks to support the iPhone Duo, I also took the opportunity to apply what I learned to update my two other free apps. Both of these are absolutely free with no in-app purchases.

Numble

Guess the secret number

Numble is a simple number game where you need to guess a 5 digit number in 5 attempts.

On the first attempt, you will get advised if your digit is correct, too high or too low.

On subsequent attempts, if the secret number contains one of the digits in your number, that number will display an orange background. If the secret number contains one of the digits in your guessed number and that digit is in the same place as the one in the secret number, the background turns green.

You can practice as many times as you like, and when you are ready, you can play the daily game which presents the same number to everyone playing the game. You only have one game day game each day and your results are shared across all of your devices. After completing a daily game, you can share your results with others.

Nimtastic

Learn the strategy and be a winner

Nim is a mathematical game of strategy in which two players take turns removing objects from distinct heaps or rows. On each turn, a player must remove at least one object, and may remove any number of objects provided they all come from the same heap or row. This game will teach you how you can win and impress your friends.
